Decoding Wedding Dress Codes: Part One

This week, we’re getting right to the chase – we’re decoding wedding dress codes. One of the most frequently asked questions I get on the daily is “I have a wedding coming up, and there’s a specific dress code – what do I wear?!”

In this week’s blog post, I’ll be explaining what different dress codes mean, and my favourite pieces that suit each dress code!

This post will focus on more formal dress codes, but stay tuned for next week for more casual dress codes!

This is a post you’ll definitely want to bookmark and save for later, these dress codes can also be used for more than just weddings!

Black-Tie

If you’ve been invited to a black-tie event, this is most likely an evening event. This is your chance to dress to the nines, and look red carpet ready. To meet a black tie dress code, it looks like:

  • A formal floor length gown that covers the ankle
  • Elegant pantsuits

If you’re going to the event with a date, it’s typical of men to wear a tuxedo, so tell your man to take note.

Formal or Black-Tie Optional

I know what you’re thinking, isn’t this just the same thing as black tie?

Well yes… but no. Tell your man he can put the tuxedo away, but as for you, a floor length gown is still acceptable, however it’s more acceptable to show ankle. More options for a formal/black-tie optional dress code include:

  • A fancy cocktail dress
  • A dressy pantsuit

Cocktail

This is a common dress code that I often get questions about. A cocktail dress is the perfect balance between something elegant yet comfortable, and bridges the gap between day and nightwear. A cocktail dress may look like something like this:

  • Knee-length or midi dress
  • Classy & polished
  • Avoid styles that are overly embellished

Semi-Formal or Dressy Casual

For a semi-formal or dressy casual wedding, it is important to note the timing of the event. A semi-formal dress code allows you to dress more for comfort. However, don’t confuse this for casual. Semi-formal/dressy casual dress code tips include:

  • Wear darker, more “formal” colours for an evening wedding (e.g. navy)
  • Opt for light colours and fabrics for a daytime event (e.g. pastels)
  • Below the knee dress, or a dressy top and skirt
  • An elegant pantsuit
  • Pair your outfit with heels, wedges or formal flats

In the meantime, happy hunting!
